GEOS-5 DAS - bug?

Posted by Carlos Cruz on Jun 4, 2008 11:19:29 AM

In an earlier entry:

https://modelingguru.nasa.gov/clearspace/blogs/geos5/2008/06/04/running-a-geos5- das-merra-simulation

we described the steps to run a 1/2 degree DAS MERRA simulation. Absent in that post is the fact that the run originally failed during acquire (a process to get the observational data). Inspection of the error file shows the following:

qsub -W block=true acquire.pbs

...

if ( 0 ) then
else
if ( ( ( -e /discover/nobackup/ccruz/fvwork.21675/acquire.FAILED ) || ( 0 ) ) && ( ! 0 ) ) then
echo fvpsas: cannot acquire observational data
fvpsas: cannot acquire observational data
set ecode = 99
set emessage = FATAL ERROR: fvpsas cannot acquire observational data
echo FATAL ERROR: fvpsas cannot acquire observational data
FATAL ERROR: fvpsas cannot acquire observational data
endif
if ( 0 && 99 ) then
if ( 99 ) exit 99
exit 99
set RC___ = 99
else
if ( 1 && 99 ) then
echo error: aborting <AcquireObservations_> with rc = 99
error: aborting <AcquireObservations_> with rc = 99

Under Linux/bin there exists a file, GEOSdas.csm, that contains the "CSH module defining functions for fvpsas". fvpsas is the script invoked from the job file (g5das.j) created during the fvsetup session. The above error message (and failure) was

traced back to GEOSdas.csm. It is not exactly clear why but there seems to be an implicit assumption about group sponsor IDs hardwired in the GEOSdas.csm script. The problem can be unacceptably overcome by changing a few lines to reflect the "unaffiliated" group ID:

Linux/bin> diff GEOSdas.csm GEOSdas.csm.sivo
918c918
old              fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=$GID"
---
new              fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=k3002"
943c943
old              fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=$GID"
---
new              fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=k3002"
1003c1003
old              fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=$GID"
---
new              fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=k3002"
1046c1046
old                   fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=$GID"
---
new                   fname2 "#PBS -W group_list=k3002"
1424c1424
old           -gid $GID \
---
new           -gid k3002 \

We are not sure if there is a way to avoid this problem that does not involve changing the GEOSdas.csm script. In the meantime we use the above hack.
