A climate system model is constructed from the discretization of the equations that represent the basic laws that govern the behavior of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface. The computational effort required to run simulations of the resulting  3D "coupled climate model"constitutes one of the grand challenges in computational science that we face today. Scientific issues aside, some of the technical issues associated with climate modeling concern the usage of computing facilities. In this document we will introduce some fundamental concepts necessary to understand the steps needed to setup modelE for climate sensitivity experiment and provide some motivation for the ensuing Climate@home experiments.
