SWE products for assimilation

For "AMSR-E SWE" assimilation, is this the "AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 Global SWE" from NSIDC?  (https://nsidc.org/data/AE_DySno/versions/2)  It looks like the right filename but the release number is off by one. Is there an example or test case for this?

For "PMW snow", is there a list of products this has been used with or is intended to work with?

Thanks,

Clay

    Hi Clay,

    It looks like NSIDC updated the version/release number and we haven't updated our code yet.

    You should be able to use the version of the data in that link, and then update: LISF/lis/dataassim/obs/AMSRE_SWE/more read_AMSRE_SWE.F90

    ------

      name = trim(ndir)//'/'//trim(fyr)//'/'//'AMSR_E_L3_DailySnow_V09_'&

             //trim(fyr)//trim(fmo)//trim(fda)//'.hdf'

    end subroutine AMSRE_SWE_filename

    ------

    Just change the "V09" to "V10".  I don't have an example or testcase.  There's only one LIS config entry to set, to point to the directory with the data.

    I'll ask the snow DA team for more advice, including your "PMW snow" question.

      Hi Clay,

      Hold on - it's likely that AMSR-E SWE DA is not supported in LIS currently.  We'll update soon.

      Furthermore, the PMW snow codes are outdated and not working properly.  We expect to phase it out.

      In the meantime, what LSM do you intend to use?  Are you specifically looking for SWE DA?  Or will snow depth DA potentially be sufficient?

          Re: SWE products for assimilation

          Hi Clay,

          In the LISF-7.3.x public release, the following snow DA instances are supported currently:

          ANSA SWE or snow depth for Noah-3.6

          ANSA snow depth for Noah-MP-3.6

          AMSR2 snow depth for Noah-3.3

          You can probably figure out how to migrate support for the different products between the versions of Noah-3.x.

          In the more cutting-edge development eis-freshwater branch on GitHub, ANSA and AMSR2 snow depth DA for NoahMP401 is also enabled.  This will eventually migrate into the master branch and then into a future public release.

          On the LIS project disk on Discover, you can find these two datasets here:

          ANSA: RS_DATA/ANSA_CRESS_GHCN_SNOTEL

          AMSR2: RS_DATA/GCOMW_AMSR2_SND

          ANSA is available 20 Jun 2002 - 03 Oct 2011

          AMSR2 is available 02 Jul 2012 - 24 Mar 2021 (but we can extend on disk to near-present if required)

          PMW is no longer supported.  We should take this out of the Users' Guides.

          AMSR-E is currently disabled.  You can try to enable it again by editing code in the LISF/lis/plugins directory.  But note that we did disable AMSR-E since ANSA is a modified version of AMSR-E.

          David
